Flood Alleviation Scheme
As the events of June 2007 showed so dramatically, flooding is a major concern for the future. Our pioneering Templeborough to Rotherham Flood Alleviation Scheme has been praised by Floods Minister John Healey, who visited the project.
The project is well underway with Phase 1 already complete. The main contractors, Volker Stevin, with help from designers Jacobs, have made massive progress in strengthening the banks of the 1 km stretch of the River Don which flows through the town.
A resource and urban wetland area has also been created, where any excess water that is a result of flooding will transfer to. This also provides a nature resource for Rotherham people and wildlife.
The scheme is being delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency. It will achieve a 1 in 100 design life for the defences with a construction design life of 120 years. The flood defence works will make a major contribution to the Renaissance of the town centre, protecting the future and existing developments, helping to make a feature of the river.
